Welcome to our Year 1 Page

Welcome to Year 1.  We aim to work in partnership with you, as a parent or carer to ensure we provide a caring, happy, safe and memorable learning experience.

Our Year 1 curriculum will:

  • Promote and model our ‘WE CARE’ values

  • Develop the children’s language and oracy skills to allow them to communicate effectively

  • Deliver a meaningful and flexible curriculum through exciting themes and books to excite and engage our learners

  • Meet the needs of all our children through a nurturing and inclusive approach

  • Provide an engaging and safe environment for the children to learn

  • Provide a variety of engaging enrichment opportunities

  • Develop collaborative and independent skills

In Year 1 we offer a flexible, enriched, connected and nurturing curriculum that goes beyond the statutory requirements.

We continue to build on the key skills and knowledge learnt in Early Years as they start the KS1 curriculum. The children enjoy learning through a variety of inspiring themes which encompass their interests when promoting and delivering a rich curriculum.  Our themes and carefully selected books provide hooks into exciting writing, creative, and explorative learning both indoors and outdoors.

In Year 1 the children enjoy finding out about our local area and where they live. The children explore the UK, developing their knowledge of the wider place we live in.  They find out how seaside holidays have changed over time and learn about significant people such as Neil Armstrong.  The children enjoy finding out about new artists and developing new techniques as well skills linked to moving mechanisms. Year 1 learn more about seasonal changes and weather patterns, classify animals and birds and begin to understand more about everyday materials and their properties.

As the year progresses, the classroom environments, daily routines and timetable evolve to ensure that the children leave Year 1 with the firm foundations required for future learning and a readiness for Year 2.
