Our RE Curriculum Intent

At Hamstel Infant School and Nursery we understand the importance of the teaching of the RE curriculum in developing curious and inquisitive learners. We believe that all children have the opportunity to develop their ideas and reflect on others’ thoughts and beliefs.  Our Hamstel Headlines form part of our drive for quality first teaching in RE across the school.

We aim:

  • For all children to receive a broad, balanced RE curriculum that immerses them in learning that is memorable, engaging and meaningful.

  • To offer all children a curriculum that ensures the progressive development of their RE knowledge and skills.

  • To directly teach and develop subject specific vocabulary to children. To create opportunities to enrich and secure learning, ensuring children remember more and can therefore do more.

  • All children have opportunities to develop their RE knowledge and understanding through carefully planned opportunities.

  • To ensure all children can verbally articulate and express their knowledge and understanding of an age-appropriate, ambitious RE curriculum.

  • That by the end of Key Stage One, all of our children will have participated in a range of learning opportunities and experiences, inside and outside the classroom that enhances their skills, knowledge and understanding of different religious beliefs

 This will be achieved by:

  • RE being taught through engaging and immersive weekly lessons

  • Promoting inquisitive minds, respect, tolerance and understanding for all those around them including themselves.

  • Promoting the asking and answering questions linked to different faiths and beliefs

  • Using our local community and resources to enhance RE learning

  • Teaching deliberate subject specific vocabulary to enhance vocabulary development

  • Modelling key vocabulary and the use of stem sentences to support children’s articulation and oracy skills

  • A carefully planned RE curriculum that shows progression and sequenced lessons from Nursery to end of KS1.

  • Adapting outcomes, tasks and resources to meet the needs of all children

  • Use of formative assessment to build on previous learning and move learning forward

  • Have a range of resources to enhance the teaching and learning of RE

How will we know we have achieved our aims?

  • Children will use subject vocabulary correctly to communicate their understanding of RE

  • Children will begin to make connections from RE to other learning

  • Children will develop their thinking skills, and inquisitiveness about different religious faiths and ideas

  • The learning of RE is loved by teachers and children across the school.

  • Teachers have high expectations and children make good progress across their RE lessons

  • All children speak confidently and positively about their RE learning

  • By Children will be accepting and inclusive to their peers.

RE is provided for all pupils, and is inclusive and broad minded. Parents do have the right to withdraw pupils from RE: if you wish to do this, make an appointment with the Head teacher. The school does not support selective withdrawal from RE.
