At Hamstel Infant School and Nursery we understand the importance of every child’s physical development and the necessity to provide all with the opportunity to develop key movement skills. We seek to inspire children through Games, Gymnastics and Dance, allowing them to develop their own love of physical activity. Our Hamstel Headlines form part of our drive for quality first teaching in PE across the school.  

In EYFS, children access planned opportunities to develop their fine and gross motor skills, which is extended into their continuous provision.  In Reception, alongside this they have a 30 minute PE lesson in the hall.

In KS1 the children have two 45 minutes lessons of PE a week.  Each week the children have a lesson that takes place outside and develops fundamental physical skills and games, and a lesson that takes place inside which alternates half termly between dance and gymnastics.

 

 We aim:

  • For all children to receive a broad, balanced PE curriculum that immerses them in learning that is physical, memorable, engaging and meaningful. 

  • To offer all children a curriculum that ensures the progressive development of their physical well-being, developing their understanding, knowledge and skills.  

  • To directly teach and develop subject specific vocabulary to children. 

  • To create opportunities to enrich and secure learning, ensuring children remember more and can therefore do more.

  • All children have opportunities to practice and develop their physical skills and knowledge through carefully planned opportunities.

  • To ensure all children can verbally articulate and express their knowledge and understanding of an age-appropriate, ambitious PE curriculum.

  • That by the end of Key Stage One, all of our children will have participated in a range of learning opportunities and experiences, inside and outside the classroom that enhances their skills, knowledge and understanding of physical movement through, Dance, Gymnastic and Games.          

                       

 This will be achieved by:

  • PE being taught through physical and engaging learning opportunities so children can express themselves and make connections 

  • Promoting children to develop a positive, healthy, physical and mental outlook

  • Using our local community and resources to enhance the children’s PE learning

  • Teaching deliberate subject specific vocabulary to enhance vocabulary development

  • Modelling key vocabulary and the use stem sentences support children’s articulation and oracy skills

  • A carefully planned PE curriculum that shows progression and sequenced lessons from Nursery to end of KS1.

  • Adapting outcomes, tasks and resources to meet the needs of all children

  • Use of formative assessment to build on previous learning and move learning forward

  • Having a range of resources and experiences to enhance the teaching and learning of PE

How will we know we have achieved our aims?

  • Children will use vocabulary correctly to communicate their understanding of PE

  • Children will begin to build on, make connections and apply fundamental movement to physical team games and other learning

  • Children will develop their knowledge, skills, and inquisitiveness about physical development and sports

  • The learning of PE is loved by teachers and children across the school.

  • Teachers have high expectations and children make good progress across their PE lessons

  • All children speak confidently and positively about their PE learning 

  • By celebrating successes in sports and each other both in school and outside of school
