At Hamstel Infant and Nursery School we believe that mathematics is an essential life skill and that all children deserve to develop an enjoyment of Maths and have opportunities to develop fluency, problem solve and reason.

We aim:

We aim to deliver our Maths curriculum so that it promotes an enjoyment of Maths and provides them with the necessary skills to be successful mathematicians and make progress.  We aim to provide the children with the skills and knowledge so they can improve and develop fluency and reasoning and problem solving skills from an early age.  Our Hamstel Headlines help drive our commitment to all our children receiving quality first teaching in Maths.    Through our delivery of our Maths curriculum we aim:

  • For every child to be a confident mathematician

  • To give all learners the skills needed to become fluent in developing number sense

  • That by the end of KS1 children will have a bank of key representations to allow them to understand and solve mathematical equations

  • To provide all children the opportunity to develop their mathematical thinking through problem solving, reasoning and articulating their understanding

  • To offer a flexible curriculum that focuses on taking small steps to secure learning so children can remember more

  • For children to use subject specific vocabulary to enrich, support and express their understanding of maths

This will be achieved by:

  • KS1 children having a daily maths lesson that follows the Maths No Problem! Scheme

  • Teaching explicit fluency lessons using the NCTEM Mastering Number scheme to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense from Reception to Year 2

  • EYFS children having an explicit weekly Shape, Space and Measure lesson

  • Setting up well planned mathematical learning opportunities through continuous provision in EYFS

  • Delivering daily Maths Meetings in EYFS to further embed mathematical knowledge and skills

  • Developing well planned and sequenced lessons to meet the learning outcomes in the maths curriculum

  • Making adaptations to learning outcomes to make sure learning outcomes are successful for all children

  • Subject specific vocabulary being modelled by adults and is used confidently by children

  • STEM Sentences are used to provide structure so children can use correctly and in context

  • Using formative assessment in all lessons to improve teaching and learning in maths

  • Using effective questioning techniques so children develop their mathematical thinking, problem solving and reasoning skills

  • Developing independence when using resources and techniques in maths lessons

  • Using the EYFS Mathematics Progress Model Checkpoints and the end of KS1 Assessment Framework to make informed judgements to meet ELG and the end of KS1 expectations

  • Provide a wide range of enrichment opportunities to enhance our maths curriculum

How will we know we have achieved our aims?

  • Children will develop number sense and become fluent in number facts

  • Children will be confident in reasoning skills and use subject specific vocabulary to explain their thinking in full sentences

  • Children will apply their mathematical knowledge and skills to show case their depth of understanding when problem solving and completing mathematical tasks

  • Children can apply their math’s knowledge to real life opportunities

  • Children will enjoy maths and become resilient, confident and independent learners

  • Children make good progress in maths are prepared for the next stage in learning regardless of their starting point
