At Hamstel Infant and Nursery School we understand the importance of offering a knowledge and skills based English curriculum as guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the National Curriculum requirements. We believe our English curriculum meets the needs of the children in our community.

 

We aim:

To deliver our English curriculum using the Hamstel Headlines by ensuring all staff are skilled in our fundamental techniques that we believe will make the difference in their learning.

  • To provide all children with a flexible, enriched and fulfilled English curriculum to secure learning at the end of EYFS and KS1

  • To develop early language skills to enrich all children and allow them to access the age appropriate curriculum

  • To use our themes, high quality books and hooks to engage the children and provide meaningful links

  • To ensure the English curriculum is inclusive and nurturing, that meets the needs of all children

  • To provide an English curriculum that offers a wealth of enrichment experiences

This will be achieved through:

  • Our thematic approach and the use of high quality books that gives meaning to learning

  • Our WE CARE values that develop through the skills needed to be successful in our English curriculum

  • Carefully structured planning that is sequenced and shows progression through the English curriculum from Nursery to end of KS1

  • Talk opportunities to ensure children can communicate their learning in the classroom

  • Planning of deliberate vocabulary that enriches the development of age appropriate language

  • Providing time for children to practice, apply and embed reading, phonics, writing and oracy skills 

  • Engaging environments that provide a wide range of books and rich vocabulary

  • Adapted planning, tasks, modelling, scaffolding, questioning and outcomes that meets the needs of all the children in reading, writing and oracy

  • Quality first teaching that is driven through our commitment to our Hamstel Headlines

  • Staff having strong subject knowledge of the English curriculum building on previous learning and moving learning forward

  • Using the EYFS Literacy Progress Model Checkpoints and the end of KS1 Assessment Framework to make informed judgements to meet ELG and the end of KS1 expectations

How will we know we have achieved our aims?

  • All children are engaged and positive about their learning in Literacy

  • Children will have improved oracy skills to communicate their learning 

  • Children will develop and confidently use a wide range of vocabulary through their literacy and reading lessons

  • Children have the appropriate knowledge and skills to apply to reading, writing and oracy in their Literacy lessons and beyond

  • Children make excellent progress in reading, writing and oracy development to meet the age-expected outcomes

  • Children are confident and independent learners in their literacy, phonics and reading  lessons

  • Children are prepared for each step of their English curriculum journey through a nurturing, flexible and enriched approach
